Austria vs. United States
Side-by-side comparison of key labor market metrics between Austria and the United States.
Important Note on Comparability
Austrian and US labor market data are not directly comparable. The two countries use fundamentally different survey methods, definitions, and classification systems:
- Unemployment rate: Austria reports two rates (AMS register: 8.3% vs ILO survey: 5.5%). The US uses a single methodology (BLS/CPS, comparable to ILO).
- Salaries: Austrian gross salaries include social insurance contributions and 13th/14th month bonuses (vacation/Christmas pay). US salaries exclude employer-paid health insurance, a major hidden cost.
- Industry classification: Austria uses ÖNACE (EU NACE), the US uses NAICS — the systems are not directly transferable at the detailed level.
- Social safety net: Austria's universal healthcare, collective agreement minimum wages, 5 weeks minimum vacation, and strong dismissal protections make pure salary comparisons misleading.
The comparisons below show orders of magnitude and structural differences — not exact equivalents.
Total Employment
Austria's workforce is ~3% of the US, proportional to its population ratio (9.1M vs 335M).

Tourism & Hospitality Share
Despite Austria's tourism reputation, the employment share is similar. Austria's tourism is highly seasonal (winter/summer peaks).

Healthcare Share
The US healthcare system employs far more people due to private insurance administration, higher prices, and more specialists per capita.

Public Administration Share
US figure includes federal, state, and local government. Austria's smaller geographic scale means fewer layers of administration.

IT & Software Share
Austria's IT sector is proportionally larger, partly due to classification differences (NACE J62_J63 vs NAICS).

Minimum Paid Vacation
Austria guarantees 5 weeks paid vacation by law. The US has no federal vacation mandate; average private sector: ~10 days.
